Carthusian monastery, private mansion, boys’ school and almshouse: The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. When it first opened its doors to the public, we were commissioned to create a website that would communicate every aspect of this historic living community. As its brand has evolved, we’ve evolved the website with it – putting the refreshed brand to work to drive visitor journeys and grow ticket bookings, developing the site as both a storytelling platform and a business tool.
The evolution of The Charterhouse brand prompted the opportunity to bring some fresh thinking to the website, in particular how the brand can be used to communicate more of its rich visitor offer, as well as reach those parts of the audience who are unable to visit in person.
One of the challenges The Charterhouse has long faced is how to communicate the fullness of its nature. The overhaul of the site clearly prioritises the visitor audience – both new and existing – and presents the visitor offer at every step, from first discovery through to booking a ticket.
A new brand doesn’t have to mean a new build. The Charterhouse’s site was architected with flexibility in mind, so able to evolve the design, user experience and content in step with the new brand. For a charity, that matters: maximum impact from budget, no disruption to bookings or content, and the original investment protected and extended.
At the heart of the work was a complete redesign and re-focusing of the Visit Us template, sharpening the user experience and putting the new brand to work in driving key visitor journeys through the site – with ticket booking as the clear destination. Working closely with the client on how to position the visitor offer, we evolved the ‘Explore the Charterhouse’ section and the homepage to communicate with far greater clarity what The Charterhouse is – and just as importantly, what it isn’t.
Siobhán O'Leary Communications Manager The CharterhouseDesign Culture understand our vision, alongside our constraints as a charity, and are highly effective problem-solvers. Together, we’ve been able to tell the story of the Charterhouse much more effectively, and are developing the site's capabilities as a business tool
The evolved brand is rooted in The Charterhouse itself, with a palette drawn directly from the colours of the estate’s fabric and environment. It also brings aspects of the coat of arms into use, alongside a specially commissioned illustraiton of Masters’ Court, the front elevation of the Tudor mansion. Together these elements do important work within the site’s evolved design, for audiences discovering The Charterhouse for the first time: conveying an immediate sense of place, signalling the historic significance and the physical space as somewhere real to explore and experience.
Alongside the design and UX work, we undertook an SEO programme and are working closely with The Charterhouse team to optimise written and visual content across the site, ensuring the visitor offer is presented clearly, consistently and compellingly at every touchpoint and that the site is working hard for both traditional and AI-powered search.

Work to continually evolve and unlock the commercial potential of the website is ongoing, with a plan to focus on overhauling other key areas of the site – each one linked to growing revenue and supporting The Charterhouse’s long-term sustainability.
